Footnotes

Rutherfurd (1816-1892), "the greatest lunar photographer of the age" (Proctor), took this celebrated series of images of the moon (full on, and lit from right and left) in his garden observatory before 1870. The image by Ellery, director of the Melbourne Observatory, was taken using the "Great Melbourne Telescope" on September 1, 1873.
