Provenance: "Henry Ricketts, Brislington", ownership inscription. Ricketts (1783-1859) was a partner in Bristol's Phoenix glasshouse from 1802 until its closure in 1851; John W.N. Watkins (1924-1999), ownership inscription dated March 1955. Watkins was Professor of Philosophy at the London School of Economics from 1966 to 1989, and author of Hobbes's System of Ideas: A Study in the Political Significance of Philosophical Theories (1965).
