Wonderful Jurassic Crocodile
Stenosaurus bollensis
Jurassic
Holzmaden, Germany
Once of the most formidable of animals found in the famous Holzmaden quarries of Germany, Stenosaurus bollensis was a marine crocodile of the Late Jurassic Period. The present specimen, displaying a fine skull and lower jaw, with vertebral column present, is from a private European collection. Although not complete, it exhibits an aesthetic appeal for its natural presentation. It is seen in the position in which it was originally found, with no significant restoration. The remarkable diversity and extraordinary preservation quality of the finest fossils of this locality make it a world-renowned fossil lagerstatte, an accumulation of fossils representing an entire ecosystem of flora and fauna. Holzmaden fossils require particularly laborious and exacting laboratory preparation due to the similarity in densities of the shale matrix and the fossils. Measuring 28 x 41 x 3in (71 x 104 x 8 cm)
