Muonionalusta Meteorite Cubic Sculpture

Iron-Nickel – Fine Octahedrite
Norrbotten, Sweden

Muonionalusta is an iron-nickel meteorite discovered in Norrbotten, Sweden in 1906. Classified as a fine octahedrite, it has one of the most beautiful Widmanstatten patterns of all meteorites, as exemplified by the present specimen. Widmanstatten patterns form when the two alloys of nickel kamacite and taenite separated in the iron core of the large asteroid that was destroyed by collision with another asteroid in the asteroid belt billions of years ago. This pattern occurs only when the iron core cools at a rate of just a few degrees per million years and is not found in any iron-nickel metals on Earth. The present tabletop sculpture is of cubic form, acid etched and polished to reveal the classic Widmanstätten pattern of crystallization with a large troilite inclusions visible. Weighing approximately 3530 grams and measuring 3 x 3 x 3 in
