Two Types of Campo del Cielo Meteorite Specimens – End Cuts

Iron-nickel, Mesosiderite
Gran Chaco, Argentina

Though Campo del Cielo is an iron-nickel meteorite, there exist a very small number of silicated Campo del Cielo meteorites, which are actually a different type of meteorite altogether - a mesosiderite. The mix of iron-nickel and fragments of silicate rock is diagnostic of mesosiderites. This lot contains both types of Campo del Cielo meteorites. The end cut with the Widmanstatten etch pattern displays a polished and etched face and the reverse side exhibits regmaglypts (texture produced by the meteorite's fiery descent through Earth's atmosphere.) The mesosiderite end cut consists of 75% silica and 25% iron-nickel; the cut side shows the interesting mix of silica and the iron-nickel matrix while the reverse side displays regmaglypts. Both specimens are offered in a Riker mount.
Widmanstatten end cut measuring 3 ½ x 2 x 1 3/4in and weighs 428 grams; Silicated end cut measuring 2 ¾ x 2 ¼ x 1in and weighs 203 grams; Riker mount measuring 6 x 8in
