Very Large Amber Specimen
Eocene
Baltic Coast
Approximately 44 million years ago it has been estimated that the forests on the Baltic coast created more than 100,000 tons of amber. These deposits have been an important part of the economies of the countries in this region. The present, fine example of transparent amber hails from this area. Appearing to have a "heart-shaped" outline with a naturally pierced hole to the center, it is exemplary due to the insect inclusions found within it which stand out in high relief due to the overall clarity of the piece. Present are ants, possibly a centipede and various unidentified species. Weighing approximately 1106 grams and measuring 8 1/2 x 7 x 3 1/4in
