Rare Wasp Nest in Amber Cabochon

Sphecidae
Cretaceous
Myanmar (formerly Burma)

Known as Burmese Amber, one of the oldest clear types of amber found in the world comes from Myanmar. The amber is deeper in color than younger amber, is harder than younger amber and becomes much bluer in ultraviolet light. Many of the insects found in this amber are different from today's insects because they represent extinct species. The present clear honey colored amber cabochon contains a very unusual wasp nest, which proves that wasps, even 100 million years ago, constructed nests of mud in which to deposit their eggs. The spectacular amber specimen is offered with an enlarged photo of the nest. Offered with a mount of contemporary styling. Specimen measuring 18 x 13mm; Wasp nest measuring approximately 6 millimeters; Mount measuring 8 x 10in
