Extinct Species of Predatory Cockroach in 100-Million-Year-Old Amber
Manipulator modificaputis
Cretaceous
Myanmar, Burma
Arguable the most beautiful Cretaceous amber, Burmite is 100-year-old amber from Myanmar. The present specimen is a clear amber nugget containing a rare, extinct species of long-legged predatory cockroach. The species has recently been given the name Manipulator modificaputis, alluding to the extremely long legs which the cockroach used to capture, hold and manipulate prey insects. Amber is prehistoric tree sap, which, in rare cases, entombed insects, plant material and, occasionally, vertebrates, creating a snapshot of primitive life. Specimen measuring 6mm; Amber measuring 17 x 13mm
