French Sandstone Concretion --"Gogotte"
Oligocene
30 million years old
Fontainebleau, France
A gogotte is a millions-of-years old naturally shaped mineral rarity consisting of tiny quartz fragments held together by calcium carbonate. A mineralogical work of art indeed, each gogotte has a unique and otherworldly shape, which open each imagination to infinite interpretations.
Fontainebleau's sand is famous for its flawlessness and delicacy since the 17th century, and gives to the gogotte its porcelain appearance.
Gogotte concretions can be found in natural history museums around the world. A particularly well-preserved example of a sandstone concretion is on display at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Measuring 16 x 11 x 6 in
