Yellow Scapolite
Tanzania
Scapolite, coming from the Greek word for "shaft", is commonly found in stubby to long prismatic crystals, hence the derivation of its name. It forms in metamorphic rocks from the alteration of plagioclase feldspars. Not well known among the general public as a gemstone it is, nonetheless, a desirable stone for collectors. Its luster is superb and with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 it would be of sufficient durability to be mounted as a pendant. The present cushion-cut faceted scapolite has a clear yellow hue and excellent luster. Weighing approximately 9.11 carats and measuring 12.54 x 12.61 x 9.2mm
