Psilomalene Cabochon
Psilomelane is, at times, erroneously called black hematite, despite not being related to true hematite, which is an iron oxide. Psilomelane is a mixture of a number of minerals, although is composed mostly of the mineral Romanechite. Though its mineral name is losing its significance, it is still in use around the world as the name is applied to hydrated barium bearing manganese specimens.
Psilomelane is an important ore of manganese. With stripes of gray pyrolusite and the alternating layers submetallic black and metallic gray make this stone an ideal piece to wear. The present circular cabochon, suitable for mounting as a pendant or brooch with beautiful concentric banding, is slightly domed on one side and flat polished on the other. Weighing approximately 71.0 carats and measuring 40.52 x 4.05mm
