Published Multi-Gemstone Carving: The Kvass Seller

A published object, this figure depicts classic Russian imagery: the Kvass seller. Kvass is a fermented beverage (of less than 1.2% alchohol) made from black or regular rye bread, the color of the bread contributing to the resulting color of the drink.

The present figure is carved of a variety of Russian minerals including: the hat, of brown and black obsidian; the beard of translucent brown agate; the face and hands of eosite quartz; the tunic, of red jasper; his teeth and the apron of white kascholong opal; the trousers, of nephrite; the boots of black obsidian which rest upon a circular base carved of jasper. With 16 jasper baranki (similar to bagels) suspended from a silver wire around his neck, and rock crystal stein and brown obsidian cask. This is a unique object, created as an edition of one.
