Sir Herbert Read was a prominent English art historian, poet, literary critic and philosopher, best known for numerous books on art, which included influential volumes on the role of art in education. Read was also the co-founder of the Institute of Contemporary Arts. He was one of the earliest English writers to take notice of existentialism.

Read was born in 1893 and passed away in 1968. He studied at the University of Leeds before the outbreak of the First World War, during which he served with the Green Howards in France. He received the Military Cross and the Distinguished Service Order, and reached the rank of captain.
