Following Robbie's split from Take That, his solo contract was under threat due to dwindling sales of his debut album 'Life Through A Lens'. Most, including Williams, believe 'Angels' to be the turning point in his career. It marked his transition from the juvenile, carefree, fun Robbie, into a credible solo artist. It was the fourth single to be released from his first album, and although it never reached number one in the UK chart, only making it to fourth position, it remains one of Williams' most celebrated tracks, selling almost 1.5 million copies worldwide. Robbie has stated that I was on the verge of being dropped, and then 'Angels' came out ... There are certain songs that define an artist and I think Angels is definitely what you think about when you think of Robbie Williams. It became an anthem at his concerts and Robbie sums up its effect: Now people sing the words back to me...I can't tell you what that means...
