A fine and rare Louis XV gold and enamel snuff box, François Joubert, 1761/1762

of oval outline, the hinged lid, sides and base enameled with domestic genre scenes within enamel border of floral scrolls; with the maker's mark of François Joubert (reçu maître, 1749) , Paris 1761/1762, with the charge mark of Jean-Jacques Prevost 1762 - 1768; length: 3 3/4in.; width: 2 3/4in.

Footnotes

The best known work by François Joubert is an elaborate sauce boat of 1754 / 1755 with the arms of Mme. de Pompadour now in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris. Boxes by one Pierre-Aymé Joubert (reçu maître 1735) are recorded, but Granjean notes that "On the 23rd of December 1763 the wardens of the goldsmiths company declared him absent from Paris..." suggesting he had abandoned his business. His relation to François is not known, but the present box may be evidence that the latter was his successor.
