This extraordinary opal originates from Australia, the primary source of black opals. First discovered in the 1840s, this country produces more than 90% of precious opals, the most notable mines include Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and Andamook.
Opals are uniquely distinctive and unlike other gemstones because of their play of color. Prized opals typically have black or grey ground with an exceptional play-of-color and translucency. Gemstones in this category are rarely found in large sizes.
Play-of-color might be the most spectacular aspect of an opal's appearance. The most rare opals exhibit a very vivid play-of-color which ranges across the entire spectrum.
This stone exhibits a remarkable confetti explosion of red, orange, blue and green flashes. This, combined with its significant size, sets this opal in a unique league.
