The present work was first published by Peter Sutton in his 1998 De Hooch exhibition catalogue as a supplement to his 1980 catalogue raisonne. He suggests a date of the first half of the 1650s and compares it to De Hooch's Guardroom Interior in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (inv. no. 269, see: Sutton, ibid, cat. no. 10).
