The present portrait depicts the great-grandfather of Cosimo I, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. No contemporary portraits of him survive, and the sitter's likeness is derived from Filippino Lippi's Adoration of the Magi, altarpiece for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, painted in 1496 and now in the Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence.
