Figures by a cart in a wooded landscape
inscribed and dated 'Jan: 23.d 1769/ A present from Mr. Gainsborough to/his friend Col St. Paul/ much valued' (on paper laid down on the back of the board on verso)
pen and brown ink, brown wash heightened with white, on varnished paper laid down on panel
17.4 x 23.7cm (6 7/8 x 9 5/16in).

The present work was executed before January 1769, the date inscribed on the reverse, which Hayes interprets as the date the drawing was given to Colonel Saint Paul.
