inscribed and dated 'Jan: 23.d 1769/ A present from Mr. Gainsborough to/his friend Col St. Paul/ much valued' (on paper laid down on the back of the board on verso)
pen and brown ink, brown wash heightened with white, on varnished paper laid down on panel
17.4 x 23.7cm (6 7/8 x 9 5/16in).
