The inscription on the artist's label reads as follows:
'H.M. frigate 'TERPSICHORE', 32 guns./ (Captain Richard Bowen) engaged and/ in an action of something under two/ hours outfought and captured the/ 34. gun Spanish frigate 'MAHONESA'/ Captain Don Tomas Ayaldi on October/ 13th, 1796 in the vicinity of Carthagena./ The 'MAHONESA' was taken in prize to/ Lisbon but the damage she had/ suffered in the encounter was such/ as to make her refitting for service/ in the Royal Navy too expensive although/ she had been a remarkably fine/ vessel of 921 tons, some 240 more than/ the British ship./DgmGardner/.75'
