This service was probably supplied to Francesco Foscari (1704-1790), a historian, lawyer and diplomat who served as envoy to Pope Benedict XIV in Constantinople, Vienna and St. Petersburg. A member of a prominent Venetian family, Francesco owned the palace in which Crown Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony resided during his visit to Venice in 1739. This service may have been given as a mark of gratitude, see M Cassidy-Geiger in Fragile Diplomacy (2007), p.225, fig.128. A saucer from the service was sold by Bonhams 23 May 2012, lot 102 and a cup and two saucers was in the Hoffmeister Collection, Bonhams 25 November 2009, lot 88.
