A continental all-steel dagger
Dated 1678, possibly Italian

With tapering single-edged blade of triangular section with rectangular ricasso, hilt comprising vertically recurved quillons chiselled on the outside with scaled monsters and each with monster-head terminal, seamed baluster grip chiselled with a double medial band of foliage, and pommel chiselled in the round as a wolf's head, in original scabbard seamed along the back and showing copper brazing, chiselled along the outer side in bas-relief with scrolling foliage inhabited by two hounds and a monster-head, the back dated and engraved with owner's initial 'G.V', fixed ring for suspension, and button terminal (some blackened finish in places, perhaps as a result of fire, some light pitting)
