A Fine Presentation Naval Officer's Dirk
Dated 1832

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section (patches of old surface rust patination) brightly etched over most of its length on one side with a crowned fouled anchor amid foliage, and on the other with a martial trophy en suite, ormolu hilt comprising quillon-block with a fouled anchor on both sides against a recessed granular guard, tapering quillons each with a row of three graduated ovals on both sides and acorn-shaped terminal, domed floret pommel-cap with button terminal, and turned ivory grip (old splits and minor chips) faintly incised with owner's initials 'IB' at the base, in original ormolu scabbard engraved with branches of oak along one side, and inscribed 'From M. General Gardiner to J. Backhouse, decr., 18th, 1832.' on the other, roped suspension mounts and rings, remains of mauve suspension strap with gilt buckle and clip, and retaining nearly all its original gilding
