A 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer's Sword
By John Gill, Warranted, Early 19th Century

With curved fullered single-edged blade (some areas of old surface rust) brightly etched along one side with maker's name, the figure of Britannia, crowned 'GR' cypher, martial trophies and foliage, and along the other with a cavalryman on horseback, post 1807 royal arms, a garter star, a crowned figure of Victory and foliage, regulation russet stirrup hilt with knuckle-guard (broken) pierced for a sword-knot, faceted pommel and back-piece in one, and ribbed leather-covered grip bound with twisted silver wire, in its original russet steel scabbard (one suspension ring missing, the other incomplete)
