A Persian Circular Steel Dhal, And Two Indian Circular Dhals
The First Qajar, 19th Century, The Second 19th Century

The first of convex form with applied rounded rim and four bosses (two Indian replacements), the outer surface etched with silver-damascened (worn) shaped cartouches linked together and framing pairs of seated Persian courtly figures and foliage, all centred on a circular panel of Arabic calligraphy, the outer border with ovoidal panels of cursive script between borders of arabesques (some wear overall, the interior russet); the second of convex leather lacquered black (some crazing and minor damage), the outer surface with four steel bosses and eight applied brass medallions variously embossed and chased with animals including an elephant and tiger, a merchant and a figure in contemporary costume; the last of convex brass with four large plain brass bosses, the outer surface chased with partly silvered designs of foliage against red and black enamelled grounds (3)
