A Fine And Rare Ottoman Gold-Mounted Shamshir
Turkish Gold Marks, 19th Century

With slender curved single-edged blade of finely watered wootz steel in the so-called Jacob's Ladder pattern, hilt comprising quillon-block with pointed langets and tapering quillons, the latter each with knurled button terminal, gold grip-strap, and rounded rhinoceros horn grip-scales (one repaired), the pommel pierced with a circular gold-mounted hole for the original bullion sword-knot and tassel, in original wooden scabbard covered in black leather with broad wire seam along the inner side and deep gold locket and chape, the former with hinged gold strap along the back acting as a blade guide, the latter with raised upper border and pierced foliate terminal, two suspension mounts en suite and each with a large ring for suspension, and in fine condition
