A Sumatran Klewang, A North Sumatran (Atjeh) Rentjong, And Three Sumatran Kris
All 19th Century

The first with broad pattern-welded single-edged blade with a fuller along the back on each side, petalled basal mount with gold-inlaid decoration, rhinoceros horn grip of tapering circular section widening to form a 'beaked' pommel and partially cut with fine grooves, and petalled gold mount at the base chased with foliate designs against green and black enamel grounds, in original wooden scabbard (incomplete) with incised and pricked foliate decoration; the second of characteristic form with rhinoceros horn grip (incomplete) cut with grooves, in its wooden scabbard incised with designs of foliage; the third with straight double-edged pattern-welded blade, gold medaq (damaged), and stylised ivory Garuda hilt finely carved with scrollwork, in its wooden scabbard with characteristic figured sarongan (pendoq missing); the fourth with tapering waved pattern-welded blade, and stylised carved wooden Garuda hilt, in its wooden scabbard with sarongan (incomplete) and silver pendoq (damaged), the latter embossed along the outside with foliage inhabited by two birds; the last with straight pattern-welded blade, and carved wooden planar hilt, in its scabbard with silver pendoq embossed along one side with foliage and flower-heads within trelliswork (5)
