Footnotes

Vansittart Island, also known as Gun Carriage Island, is part of Tasmania's Vansittart Island Group, lying in the Eastern Bass Straight between Flinders and Cape Barren Islands in the Furneaux Group. First settled by sealers in the early 1800s, the first recorded permanent resident was a Thomas Tucker and his hindu wife in 1826. In 1832 George Augustus Robinson evicted the sealers in order to provide a settlement for Tasmanian Aboriginals, however this was proved misguided as the Aboriginals burnt the Island removing most of the vegetation in order to pursue their traditional hunting practices. They were subsequently moved to Flinders Island and some freehold title was given to John Riddle, one of the early sealers. Following Riddle's death in 1872 the Island was left to Elizabeth Bishop who married an Alexander Ross in 1876 and died in 1931
