A Very Rare .41 Volcanic Factory Engraved Lever-Action Rim-Fire Carbine
No. 81, Circa 1857-60

With browned octagonal barrel (some old surface rust patination) with white-metal blade fore-sight and integral magazine beneath retaining its spring with brass thumb-lever, the top flat stamped 'New Haven Conn. Patent Feb 14. 1854', brass action engraved with bold scrolling foliage over each side within dotted borders, numbered '2' behind the steel elevator block (small punched dots), and retaining traces of original silvering, back-sight with knurled elevation wheel and retaining traces of original blueing, russet lever, and varnished straight grained walnut butt (minor bruising) with brass crescent-shaped butt-plate

Footnotes

The serial number 81 appears on the action, lever, one of the upper tang screws, and on the butt beneath the upper action tang. The inside of the tang of the butt-plate and the wood beneath are both numbered 19. One of the upper tang screws is numbered 46, and the lower tang screw is numbered 07

Volcanic arms were patented by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson in 1854 and were based on the earlier patents for Hunt and Jennings rifles which also fired a self-contained cartridge consisting of a bullet with primer and propellant in the hollow base. Only 1000 carbines of this type are thought to have been produced
