A fine and rare pair of 'Maximilian' mitten gauntlets
Early 16th century

Of bright steel, each with flared cuff in two pieces riveted together, recessed turned and finely roped upper borders, five articulated metacarpal plates extending down the back of the hand to the embossed roped knuckle-plate, five overlapping plates over the fingers, the last each with border matching that of the cuff, working on dome-headed brass rivets, and with hinged four-plate thumb-defences, the main surfaces embossed with radiating flutes (the outer surfaces polished over light rust patination) (2)
