A Very Rare Hand-And-A-Half Sword
Italian Or German, Late 15th Century

With broad tapering double-edged blade with prominent central ridge along its entire length on both sides, the forte on one side struck with a foliate mark, hilt comprising iron guard formed of horizontally recurved quillons of hexagonal section springing from a quillon-block of hollowed diamond form and each incised with chevroned decoration, the copper-brazed tips each of flared octagonal section, deeply fluted kite-shaped pommel with a border of incised chevrons above and below on each side, spirally-fluted button on a petalled brass washer, and shouldered wooden grip of tapered hexagonal section covered with leather (worn, the iron parts rust patinated and now polished bright)
100 cm. blade, 131.3 cm. overall

The mark is similar to that found on the blade of a Swiss or German baselard in the Wallace Collection (inv. no. A503)
