Of large size, the round funnel bowl engraved with a band of linked garden flowers including a sunflower and a carnation, the cover and foot with further bands of flowers including an iris, another sunflower and Jacobite-type roses both full-blown and in profile, on a multiple spiral airtwist stem with a shoulder and centre knop and with a beaded ball knop forming the pointed finial on the cover, 35.8cm high overall (2)

Footnotes

Provenance:
From the Estate of Christopher Sheppard

This is possibly by the same hand as a ceremonial goblet in the John Carson collection sold by Phillips 6 June 2001, lot 37. John Carson had researched the history of ceremonial goblets and our catalogue of his collection discussed their use. He believed his goblet engraved with a similar band of flowers possibly had Jacobite significance and may have been used for toasting at a Jacobite club or other clandestine gathering.
