A facon de Venise small tazza, probably English, circa 1670
Perhaps from the Duke of Buckingham's Glasshouse, in very thin and fine soda metal, of plain circular form with a shallow top raised on a spreading foot folded at the base rim, 18.3cm diam, about 6cm high

A private London collection
In 1948 a collection of early glass was discovered at Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire, the seat of the Earls Fitzwilliam. The collection was purchased by Churchill's and details were published in their Glass Notes no.9, December 1949, pp.11-19. The collection included nine tazzas of the same shape and colour of metal as the present lot, as well as three posset pots of a similar metal and three lead glass posset pots each bearing the seal mark of Ravenscroft. E Barrington Haynes discussed the collection in The Connoisseur in 1950, ascribing the tazzas to England during the Restoration period. This important group is further discussed by Keith Kelsall, The Footed Salver, Glass in 18th Century England (1989), PP.22-23 and figs Q9-Q10. One example from Wentworth Woodhouse is now in the Corning Museum of Glass, no. 2014.2.1. Others were sold by Christie's London 3 December 2013, lot 166 and New York, 28 January 2010, lot 190.
