Footnotes

Provenance:
Collected by a Dutch nobleman Jonkheer Mr. Willem J. Snouck Hurgronje (1848-1912) and Lady Anne Boreel (1861-1929), thence by descent to Jonkheer Mr. Aarnout Marinus Snouck Hurgronje and to the present owners. In 1929 part of the collection went to Gemeente Museum, The Hague.

A closely related example in the Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich is illustrated in Reiner Rückert's catalogue (1982), vol.1, pl.XIV, fig.264. Another in the Rijksmuseum is illustrated by van Eck and Zijlstra-Zweens, Glass (1993), vol.1, p.124, fig.170. The indented finger holes allowed a firm grip as these distinctive drinking vessels became heavy when filled.
