Provenance:
From the Estate of Christopher Sheppard
Christopher Sheppard had researched this curious goblet and attributed it to Germany circa 1730. Long before Friedrich Egermann developed lithyalin glass in the 19th century, Johann Kunckel and others had experimented with glass in imitation of hardstones. Red glass, both transparent and opaque was of particular interest to the Dresden court, under whose encouragement Ehrenfried von Tschirnhaus had experimented with coloured glass while perfecting his marbled red stoneware.
