A rare Nantgarw plate in Chelsea style, circa 1818-20

The shaped rim with uneven lobes, painted in London, possibly at the Sims workshop, with two fancy birds on a grassy knoll, a smaller bird perched in the branches of the small tree behind them, the border with four birds and an insect in flight, red line rim, 21.5cm diam, impressed NANT-GARW CW mark overpainted with a red anchor

Footnotes

Genuine Chelsea porcelain was much in demand in the early 19th century which must explain the overpainting of a Chelsea red anchor over the impressed NANT-GARW CW mark. The painting is closely related to that found on the so-called Kenyon Service which bears elaborate gilt-scrolled borders of the kind associated with the Sims workshop.
