This sucrier and cover is part of one of only four tea and coffee services identified as having been painted by Thomas Pardoe in his decorating workshop at Bristol. The other sets comprise the services made for the Honourable Mrs King, for Lord Milford in 1818 and for William Lewes of Duffryn House, Carmarthenshire in 1812. The Lewes Service features panels of shells similar to those on this lot, a style of painting little changed since Pardoe's days at the Cambrian Pottery. See Jonathan Gray, The Cambrian Company, Swansea Pottery in London 1806-1808 (2012), pls 6.70 and 6.71, pp.198-200 for a Cambrian pottery cabaret tray and matching teapot and cover painted with shells by Pardoe in similar style. The teapot and cover and a saucer dish from the same service as the present lot is illustrated at pl. 6.72, p.201.
