A pair of Swansea Pottery ship plates, circa 1810

Printed in manganese within elaborate lattice borders, one with a two-masted armed brig, trophies of war in the foreground, the other with a single-masted ship, two more visible in the distance, engraved by Thomas Rothwell, the rims picked out in ochre, 24.7cm diam (one cracked, fine crazing) (2)

Footnotes

These prints by Thomas Rothwell must have been in use at the factory for some time. The two-masted ship appears on a jug dated 1815 sold in these rooms on 2 November 2015, lot 184. The single-masted ship is seen on another jug, lot 183 in the same sale and dated 1803 but also appears on a jug in the National Maritime Museum inscribed 'THE FLOWER' and 'JAMES PATEY SALCOMBE BORN 1792' which seems likely to have been made to celebrate a 21st birthday.
