The reference to 'NAVIGATION AND TRADE', the surveyor and the navvy, confirm that this beaker was made to commemorate the start of construction of a canal, perhaps planned to run through the extensive rural landscape depicted. Sadly, the canal concerned is not known but only a small number of canal-related ceramic commemoratives are recorded.
