An extraordinary Longton Hall vase and cover, circa 1758

Of large size and bold rococo form with a scrolled handle to one side, the side panels painted with brightly coloured birds including a fine peacock, the borders applied with colourful flowers, the cover modelled as an elaborate bouquet of carefully modelled blooms, 39.3cm high (typical losses to applied details) (2)

Footnotes

Longton Hall vases of this form are usually found without covers and in a smaller size, the rims applied with flowers. Another example of this much rarer and more elaborate version, with a floral bouquet as a cover, was exhibited in the English Ceramic Circle exhibition of English Pottery and Porcelain held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1948. It is illustrated in the Catalogue at pl 75, no 345 and is again of much smaller size.
