Provenance:
The Mavis Bimson Collection
Described and illustrated by Mavis Bimson, Stoneware: 16th to 20th Century, ECC Tran 1980 Vol.10, pt.5, p.262 and pl.116(d). Also illustrated by Jonathan Horne, A Catalogue of English Brown Stoneware (1985), no.19. The excise mark is similar to that on a mug in the Victoria and Albert Museum dated 1724 with the sign of the 'Cock and Bull' and inscribed 'Samll Burchatt Lambeth', illustrated by Oswald, Hildyard and Hughes, English Brown Stoneware (1982), fig.11, p.41. A Samuel Burchatt gave a character reference for Nathaniel Oade, a glover who loaned money to Dwight and eventually took over his factory. It is likely that Burchatt would have patronised his friend's pottery at Gravel Lane, Southwark and that this mug may also be Southwark.
