Provenance:
The Mavis Bimson Collection
See the mug illustrated by Jonathan Horne, A Catalogue of English Brown Stoneware (1985), no 18 which bears the same pub sign but is said to be inscribed 'Robt French'. Perhaps 'Wrench' has been misread as 'French', Thomas and Robert being of the same family. The excise mark on the 'French' mug is stated as being similar to the mug in the Victoria and Albert Museum inscribed 'Samll Burchett' and dated 1724, suggesting that it was made at Southwark. See the footnote to lot 293 in this sale.
Please note that there is restoration to the handle terminals in addition to the damage mentioned in the catalogue
