A very unusual large black basalt figure of a suppliant, late 18th century

Possibly Wedgwood, finely modelled as a Classical slave girl, kneeling with her hands crossed in front of her and bound together with a rope, her long diaphanous dress tightly wrapped around her, 28.5cm high, 38cm wide (kiln distortion and filled firing cracks)

Footnotes

The scale of this figure and relatively thin casting caused severe problems and it partly collapsed during the kiln firing. This was probably a kiln waster and it is likely a result of such manufacturing difficulty that no similar example would appear to be recorded.
