An unusual Staffordshire slipware dish, late 17th century

The wide border with seven lobed panels of cream-coloured slip, each containing two masks with brown eyes on a rouletted ground washed in green, the shaped central panel with further small masks, all reserved on a dark brown slip coat, two wavy lines around the plain rim, 27.8cm diam (broken and restuck)

A dish with related decoration is the Glaisher Collection at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, No 289, illustrated in the catalogue (1987), pl 29A. Both show very similar rouletted decoration on the cream-coloured slip panels and are washed in green. See also the two-handled mug illustrated at pl 29B
