A remarkable Thomas Webb and Son Gem Cameo vase, circa 1885-90

The shape inspired by an Islamic glass mosque lamp, probably designed by George Woodall and carved by the Woodall Team, the rich red glass overlaid in white and carved with an Oriental design of trailing peony blooms and stylised foliage within lappet-shaped panels, the neck with a fine floret diaper pattern, the red background unusually textured with a tiny seed effect, a border of stiff leaves at the base and a band of carving to simulate white jade around the footrim, 26.5cm high

Footnotes

Related decoration can be seen on a vase included in a Woodall glass photographic plate, reproduced by Ray and Lee Grover, English Cameo Glass (1980), pl.134, top right. An example of the same shape in white on red with all over floral decoration, signed by George Woodall, is in the Art Institute of Chicago, illustrated by Ray and Lee Grover, English Cameo Glass (1980), col. pl.C1. Another with the colours reversed was sold by Bonhams 17 December 2008, lot 391. A further example in red on white in the Chinese taste is in the Corning Museum of Glass, no. 2004.2.12.
