Provenance:
Thomas Goode & Co, London
Anon Sale, Christie's 9 October 2003, lot 243
A British Private Collection

A very faint number scratched on the base can be read as W2044.

The same shape, colour and style of decoration was used by Thomas and George Woodall for their famous vase 'The Race' (W2179) for which the Woodalls were paid £6.10s.6d. This is illustrated by Ray and Lee Grover, English Cameo Glass (1980), pl.106 and drawing S24. Although undoubtedly the work of the Woodalls, the present vase and its companion do not appear in any surviving drawings and W2044 cannot be identified within any published factory lists. The previous number in the Woodall inventory, W2043 is, however a similar size vase, 'Before the Race', which was created by Thomas and George Woodall as a companion to their 'Race' vase, see Grover, op.cit., pl.105 and drawing S23. The Race and Before the Race, which are both signed T & G Woodall, are now in the Chrysler Museum of Art. Their Before the Race vase has the number W2043 lightly scratched on the base.
