An exceptional St. Louis lizard vase, circa 1850

Cast in mottled blue jasper or granité, the hollow paperweight base moulded with a coiled lizard or salamander on top, the reptile brightly gilded, supporting from its centre a vase shaped as a bellflower, the vase moulded in relief with a trailing vine of convolvulus or morning glory, also picked out in gold, the rim of the vase trailed in white glass and edged with narrow gold lines, 16.3cm high, the paperweight base 8.6cm diam (minor burst air bubble on one leg of the lizard)
