A rare sulphide vase by John Ford of Edinburgh, circa 1880-1

Ovoid with a prismatic-cut neck and circular star-cut foot, the central band with pillar flutes and fine diamonds, the front oval panel set with a sulphide portrait of Sir Walter Scott, engraved with the subject's name and a laurel wreath, 25.5cm high

John Ford and Co of the Holyrood Glassworks, Edinburgh made a wide range of high-quality sulphides circa 1880-81. The portrait of Scott on the present vase is taken from a medal by William Bain and Robert Faulkner. A vase of similar shape set with a portrait of Robert Burns was in the Paul Jokelson Collection, see Paul Dunlop's Catalogue (1991), p.107, fig.367.
