These glasses can be identified on the basis of a drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.784-1978) by John Jones, showing a similar glass engraved 'J.A.M.'. The drawing is inscribed 'Had by J.A. Mandezabal'. John Jones took over the firm of Blades and Jones following the deaths of his father and of John Blades who died in 1829. The V and A also has a sheet of drawings by Leopold William Jones dating from circa 1840 which also shows this shape.
Juan Álvarez Mandezabal (1790-1853) was a prominent Spanish economist and politician as well as a liberal revolutionary. He was forced into exile from 1823-35, during which time he lived and worked in England. Having returned to Spain, he was exiled once again between 1843-47. This set of glass was probably ordered by Álvarez Mandezabal prior to 1835.
Examples from the set were shown in the Glass Circle 'From Palace to Parlour' exhibition (2003), cat. p.11, fig.4. The set is also discussed by Howard Coutts, 'London Cut Glass. The Work of John Blades and Messrs. Jones', Antique Collecting June 1987. The shapes are derived from the set of glass made in 1806-8 for the Prince of Wales by Perrin Geddes & Co of Warrington.
