An engraved 'Privateer' firing glass commemorating the Lord Clive, circa 1770-80

The round funnel bowl engraved on one side with the three-masted ship in full sail, inscribed around the rim 'Success to ye Ld Clive', on a hexagonal-cut faceted stem and a heavy firing foot, 12cm high

Two other identical glasses are recorded, one in the Museum of London, ID no. 34 139/27. The other was in the A.C.Hubbard Jr. Collection sold by Bonhams 30 November 2011, lot 110 and illustrated by Ward Lloyd, A Wine Lover's Glasses (2000), p.94, pl.134.

The ship HMS Kingston was part of Admiral John Byng's squadron during the Seven Years' War. She was sold to Privateers linked to the East India Company on 14 January 1762 and re-named Lord Clive. As a Privateer the Lord Clive saw action during the Spanish-Portuguese War but sank off Colonia do Sacramento in South America in January 1763.
